CRASH Services Supports Northern Ireland Road Safety Education
P7 Pupils Put Their Road Safety Knowledge to the Test at the Northern Ireland Primary School Road Safety Quiz Final
All roads led to Cookstown on Monday 10 March 2025 as pupils from across Northern Ireland gathered for the annual NI Primary School Road Safety Quiz Final, one of the longest-running and most successful road safety education initiatives in the province.
Sponsored by CRASH Services, Northern Ireland’s leading accident management company, the final marked the culmination of 11 regional heats and over 30 years of promoting road safety awareness among primary school children.
Organised by Road Safe NI, the annual competition continues to grow in popularity, helping thousands of Primary 7 pupils develop a greater understanding of road safety through fun, interactive learning.
Encouraging Road Safety Education Through Competition
The event brought together enthusiastic P7 pupils from schools across Northern Ireland to test their road safety knowledge and general awareness in a challenging but enjoyable team quiz.
Each school entered a team of four pupils, with the top two teams from each of the 11 qualifying heats securing a place in the prestigious final.
The quiz challenged participants across seven rounds of eight questions, covering:
- Road safety awareness
- Road signs
- Pedestrian safety
- General knowledge
- Safe behaviour on and around roads
The competition aims to reinforce key road safety messages while encouraging teamwork, confidence and learning among young people.
Record Number of Schools Take Part
Davy Jackson, Chairperson of Road Safe NI, shared his enthusiasm for the continued success of the programme:
“We are thrilled with the continued success of the annual Primary School Road Safety Quiz. This year saw the largest entry to date, with 205 schools registered across 11 heats. The final brought together two teams from each heat, all competing to be crowned NI champions at the Glenavon Hotel.

Minister Highlights Importance of Road Safety Education
Department for Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins attended the event and praised the role the competition plays in promoting road safety awareness among young people.
She said:
“I am delighted to attend the Northern Ireland Primary School Road Safety Quiz Final that helps to raise awareness among children about road safety, which is an issue for us all.
Road safety is a priority for me as Minister and last year my predecessor John O’Dowd launched the Road Safety Strategy to 2030 and a supporting 2024/25 Action Plan to help improve road safety for everyone.
The Department has also recently reinstated funding to support the Motor Vehicle and Road User (MVRUS) GCSE, which is also designed to improve road safety.
The GCSE targets young people, who are sadly over-represented in road traffic fatalities and serious injuries, and includes a practical element in which pupils learn the safe use of a moped.
Cycling Proficiency Scheme (CPS) and the Practical Child Pedestrian Safety Training (PCPST) scheme are two of my Department’s long running primary school initiatives and they also make an important contribution to ensuring children understand road safety and active travel issues and also better prepare them as road users as they gain more independence through their childhood.”

Following a closely contested final, the winning schools were:
1st Place – Castleroe Primary School, Coleraine
2nd Place – St Patrick’s Primary School, Newry
3rd Place – St Mary’s Altinure Primary School, Derry/Londonderry
