Understanding the Temporary Exemption Certificate (TEC)
To help address MOT testing delays in Northern Ireland, certain vehicles became eligible for a Temporary Exemption Certificate (TEC) from 1 June 2024.
A TEC allows eligible vehicles that already have a valid MOT certificate to receive an automatic extension, meaning they will not require another MOT test for a further 12 months based on their MOT renewal date.
Which Vehicles Qualify for the MOT Exemption?
The MOT exemption applies to vehicles first registered between:
- 1 June 2017 and 31 May 2018, or
- 1 June 2019 and 31 May 2020

However, drivers remain responsible for ensuring their vehicle is:
- Roadworthy
- Properly insured
- Correctly taxed

What If You’ve Already Booked an MOT Test?
If your vehicle qualifies for a Temporary Exemption Certificate and you have already booked an MOT appointment:
- The Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) will cancel the booking.
- Any MOT fee paid will be refunded.
- You will be notified of your revised MOT renewal date.
What If Your MOT Has Already Expired?
If your MOT certificate has already expired, the exemption does not apply.
You must:
- Book an MOT test as normal.
- Ensure the vehicle remains legal to use.
- Consider having a pre-MOT inspection carried out by a qualified mechanic.

What If Your Vehicle Does Not Qualify?
You will need to arrange an MOT test as usual if:
