At CRASH Services, we believe that road safety education is one of the most important investments we can make in our community. As a proud supporter of local road safety initiatives and through our ongoing commitment to our charity partner, Road Safe NI Charity, we were thrilled to support a recent Young Drivers Road Safety Initiative at Bishopscourt Racing Circuit.

The event helped prepare Year 13 and 14 students from St Colman’s High and Sixth Form College, Ballynahinch, for the heavy responsibilities of life on the road. Held on Wednesday, 30 September, this collaborative event brought together emergency services, local government, and road safety advocates to educate young people on the real-world risks, legalities, and responsibilities of driving.

A True Community Collaboration for Northern Ireland Roads

Organised by the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s Rowallane District Electoral Area (DEA) Forum and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (Southern Command), the event showcased a united front in promoting road safety.

We were thrilled to partner alongside other dedicated organisations, including:

What We Shared: Essential Guidance for New Drivers

As an organisation that assists motorists every day following traffic accidents, we know how vital it is for young drivers to understand the rules of the road before they get behind the wheel independently.

During our sessions, our team focused on equipping students with crucial practical knowledge, including:

  • An overview of the Graduated Driving Licence (GDL) scheme and how it impacts new motorists.
  • Clear guidance on motor insurance requirements.
  • The serious long-term implications that penalty points can have for young drivers.

Alongside our insights, representatives from the PSNI provided critical advice on safe driving habits, the dangers of speeding and distracted driving, and the correct, life-saving procedures for encountering emergency service vehicles.

Putting Theory Into Practice

One of the standout moments of the day was the chance for students to get behind the wheel. Under the guidance of qualified instructors from Drive Techniques Driving School, participants took part in practical driving lessons within the safe, controlled environment of the Bishopscourt Racing Circuit. This hands-on experience allowed them to build driving awareness and spatial confidence early on.

A Shared Commitment to Safer Roads

Rowallane DEA Chairperson, Councillor Jonny Jackson, who attended the event, praised the collaborative effort:

“Road safety education is vital for young people as they prepare to become the next generation of drivers. This initiative provided students with valuable information and practical experience to help them make safe and responsible decisions when using our roads. I would like to thank all of the partner organisations who contributed to delivering such an informative and engaging event.”

This initiative forms a key part of the Rowallane DEA Forum’s ongoing mission to foster responsible road user behavior. Aligned with the mission of charities like Road Safe NI to reduce road casualties through education, CRASH Services remains deeply committed to supporting educational programs that protect young motorists and ensure safer journeys across Northern Ireland.
