What is a Temporary MOT Exemption Certificate (TEC)?
From 1st June 2024, certain vehicles in Northern Ireland will be eligible for a Temporary Exemption Certificate (TEC). This means vehicles that have passed their annual MOT test and have a valid MOT certificate won’t need to undergo another test for 12 months, based on the MOT renewal date.
Which Cars Are Affected by the Northern Ireland MOT Exemption?
The MOT test exemption applies to vehicles that were first registered between:
- 1st June 2017 and 31st May 2018, or
- 1st June 2019 and 31st May 2020.
If your car falls within these periods and has a valid MOT certificate, it will not require another test until the expiration of the current certificate
Why Has This MOT Exemption Policy Been Introduced in Northern Ireland?
The Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister, John O’Dowd, introduced the MOT exemption to help reduce long waiting times for MOT test centres. This change will help ease the pressure on the MOT system, ensuring that more vehicles can get tested on time and keep the roads safe.
How to Check if Your Car is Eligible for MOT Exemption
To find out if your vehicle qualifies for the MOT exemption, use the MOT status checker at www.gov.uk/check-mot-status. You can also find your vehicle’s MOT history the vehicle logbook and renewal date on the current MOT certificate.
Do You Need to Apply for a Temporary MOT Exemption?
If your vehicle qualifies for the Temporary MOT Exemption Certificate, no application is necessary. The TEC will automatically be applied to your vehicle without the need for a physical or digital copy.
However, it’s important to note that your car must remain roadworthy, taxed, and insured. Remember, it is illegal to drive a car that is not roadworthy, even with a valid MOT certificate. Regular vehicle safety checks are still strongly recommended to ensure it’s safe to drive.
What If You Have Already Booked an MOT Test?
If your MOT certificate is still valid and you’ve already booked an MOT test in Northern Ireland, there’s no need to worry. The Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) will automatically cancel your test appointment, refund the test fee, and email with your new MOT renewal date.
What If Your Current MOT Certificate Has Expired?
If your MOT certificate has already expired, you must proceed with your MOT test as usual. We recommend that you take your vehicle to a fully qualified mechanic for a pre-test check to ensure it is in good working order and ready to pass its MOT.
What If Your Vehicle Does Not Qualify for the MOT Exemption?
If your car was not registered between 1st June 2017 and 31st May 2018 or 1st June 2019 and 31st May 2020, you’ll need to book an MOT test as normal. Additionally, if your MOT certificate has expired, or your car was last tested outside Northern Ireland, the MOT exemption will not apply.
The exemption also won’t apply if:
- Your MOT certificate has already expired.
- Your car was last tested outside of Northern Ireland.
