Helping young riders stay safe, seen and confident on the journey to school.
Cycling to school is a fantastic way for children to stay active, build independence, and reduce traffic congestion. But cycling on roads, even short ones, comes with risks. Making sure your child is road-ready is one of the most important steps.
Here’s what every young cyclist (and their parent or carer) should know before pedalling to school:
-
Know the Rules of the Road
Before your child cycles to school alone, your child should understand:
- How to signal left and right clearly with one hand
- When to stop and give way
- The meaning of common road signs and markings
Consider enrolling in a Bikeability course (formerly Cycling Proficiency), as many Northern Ireland schools offer these.
-
Always Wear a Helmet
A properly fitted helmet could save your child’s life in a crash. Make sure it:
- Sits flat on their head (not tilted back)
- Covers the forehead
- Is fastened snugly with a V shape under each ear
Let them choose a style or colour they like — they’re more likely to wear it consistently.
-
Check the Bike Before Every Ride
Use the ABC Check:
- A = Air in tyres
- B = Brakes work well
- C = Chain is clean, oiled, and moves smoothly
Also ensure the saddle is the right height and all parts are secure.
-
Be Bright and Be Seen
Visibility is key, especially in low light:
- Wear bright or reflective clothing
- Use front (white) and rear (red) lights
- Fit reflectors on pedals and wheels
- Consider a high-visibility vest or bag cover
Drivers can’t avoid what they can’t see.
-
Stick to Safe Routes
Plan the safest route together:
- Use cycle lanes whenever possible
- Avoid fast or narrow roads
- Cross major junctions on foot if safer
Practice the full journey at a quiet time before school starts.
-
Ride Responsibly – Especially in Groups
Children should:
- Ride single file on busy roads
- Keep both hands on the handlebars (except when signalling)
- Never weave between cars or jump red lights
If riding with friends, safety comes first — no racing or showing off.
-
No Distractions
No phones, music or headphones while cycling -ever. Staying alert is essential for hearing traffic, sirens or approaching vehicles.
Cycling to school is fun, healthy and eco-friendly, but preparation is key. Helping your child develop the skills, confidence, and awareness to ride safely will benefit them for a lifetime.
Let’s make the roads of Northern Ireland safer for every cyclist, especially the youngest.
