Free To Choose Your Repairer?

Posted: 14th September 2015

If you have been involved in a road accident, one of the most frequently misunderstood facts is that motorists is that they are free to choose which repairers fixes their vehicle. Tony McKeown, Marketing Director at CRASH, explains

Can I choose where my vehicle is repaired?

At all times you are free to choose your own repairer. Many Insurers have networks of approved repairers. You may even be directed to a specific Bodyshop by an insurance company. You are not required by law to use a repairer ‘approved’ by any insurance company involved. An Insurance company may suggest that your choice will cause delays and add extra cost.

Your choice should be able to offer all the same benefits as an Insurer’s approved repairer. You are free to choose as long as the garage operates to industry standards and the repair costs can be satisfactorily agreed.

Do I need to get three different estimates for the repair?

No, estimates are not required. The body repair shop of your choice can agree repair rates with a Motor Engineer/Assessor.
