Pat Martin

The award winners’ interest in road safety dates back over 50 years as she began teaching in Carnmoney Primary School in 1966.  During that year she heard of Tufty Clubs and took the initiative by organising one for P1 children during her lunch hour.  She was regularly called Mrs Tufty and still is when her past pupils recognise her!

A couple of years after that she was approached by the local Road Safety Officer to teach cycling proficiency.  She continued with both until she took early retirement in 1990.

Because of her experience and enthusiasm, she approached to help set up a local road safety group in the seventies.  That group is now the Newtownabbey Road Safety Committee (NRSC).  She readily agreed and acted as Secretary.  She has been on the Committee ever since, and was also Chair of the Road Safety Council for 8years, stepping down in August 2016.
